IFMGA/IVBV/UIAGM qualifications

Technical ability is the foundation of mountain guiding, but it is only part of the profession. Equally important are the skills that cannot be measured by a climbing grade: assessing conditions, managing risk, planning, making sound decisions, and adapting to an ever-changing mountain environment.

Every IFMGA Mountain Guide completes the same internationally recognized training and examination system. Regardless of where they qualify, guides are trained to a common standard, and their certification is recognized in virtually every country where mountain guiding is a regulated profession. Today, the IFMGA standard is the global benchmark for professional mountain guiding.

IFMGA Mountain Guides are qualified to lead the full spectrum of mountain activities. Their work spans rock, ice, mixed, and alpine terrain—from single- and multi-pitch climbing to classic alpinism and challenging high-altitude objectives. In winter, they guide everything from ski touring and multi-day traverses to backcountry skiing, freeride, and heli-skiing.
