Our Association

The Polish Mountain Guides Association (PSPW) brings together mountain guides trained and certified to the IFMGA/IVBV/UIAGM standard—the highest international qualification in the profession.

From the earliest days of alpinism, guides have played a central role in exploring and climbing the great mountains of the Alps. Many of the most famous summits and classic ridges were first reached by guided parties, and the same tradition took root in the Tatras, where generations of guides helped shape the history of mountaineering.

While alpine guiding continued to develop throughout the twentieth century, the profession in Poland evolved differently during the communist era, when guiding became focused primarily on mass tourism and technical mountain guiding largely faded from practice.

Following the political changes of 1989, Polish guides committed to reviving this tradition re-established ties with their colleagues in the Alps and began working toward the internationally recognized IFMGA standard, which had emerged in the 1960s as the common framework for training and certifying mountain guides worldwide.

PSPW was founded in 1996 and became a full member of IFMGA in 2000. For more than twenty-five years, the Association has trained and certified Polish IFMGA Mountain Guides.
